Starting in June 2026, the website of the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford University (hereinafter referred to as the “Ho Center”) features a documentary introducing the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, titled “Travelogue: City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.” Running for approximately forty-one minutes, the film is presented in English, including both narration and interviews.

This is a video from the newly launched “Travelogue” series of the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies podcast this year, which introduces Buddhist temples and meditation centers. From March 2 to 5 this year, a four-person crew made a special trip to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas (CTTB) to film various buildings, natural landscapes, morning and evening recitations in the Buddha Hall, the organic farm, solar power facilities, classes at Instilling Goodness Elementary School, Developing Virtue Secondary School, and Dharma Realm Buddhist University, as well as the Jyunkang Vegetarian Restaurant. To capture the morning recitation, the crew arrived at the Buddha Hall before the ceremony which starts at 4 am to select the best camera angles, set up their equipment, and begin filming.

“Travelogue: The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas” introduces the founding patriarch, the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, who was born in China and established the Buddhist Lecture Hall in San Francisco. The 96-day Shurangama Sutra summer study and practice session in 1968 laid the foundation for the later establishment of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. In 1976, the property—the former site of the Mendocino State Hospital, which had closed in 1972—was purchased. The Venerable Master hand-crafted the more than ten thousand small Buddha images lining the four walls of the City’s main Buddha Hall. The film also mentions the Venerable Master’s four great legacies: developing the Sangha, translating our Buddhist texts, advancing education, and promoting interfaith dialogues.

The documentary further chronicles the historical development of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, daily life within the monastic community, and its mission of practice and Dharma propagation. The name “Ten Thousand Buddhas” does not refer merely to the number of Buddha images enshrined in the main hall—it symbolizes the Venerable Master’s great vow: his hope that this sacred city would become a “smelting foundry,” helping ordinary beings temper themselves, and realize their full human potential.

The account of Reverend Heng Sure and Professor Martin Verhoeven (then known as Dharma Master Heng Chao) is also featured in the documentary. From May 1977 to November 1979, the two made a three-step, one-bow pilgrimage from Gold Wheel Monastery in Los Angeles to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, dedicating the merit of their journey to world peace and the alleviation of disasters and suffering. Through its presentation of the practice and way of life at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the documentary emphasizes that Buddhism is, in essence, an educational system centered on personal experience and capable of transforming lives, rather than a dogmatic religion.

The film concludes by noting that, following the passing of the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas has continued to welcome newcomers and carry forward the Master’s vision of spreading the Dharma throughout the world. In order to expand its educational campus while preserving a peaceful and secluded environment for spiritual practice, the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas has constructed a new institution at the foot of Wonderful Enlightenment Mountain, the Wonderful Enlightenment Buddhist Institute, formerly known as the Institute for International Philosophy and Ethics.
