DRBU Alums Club Joins the Magha Puja Celebration at Abhayagiri Monastery

On March 2, 2026, the DRBU Alms Club visited Abhayagiri Monastery to celebrate Māgha Pūjā, a significant
Buddhist observance commemorating the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 arahants who came together to pay tribute to the Buddha. At that gathering, the Buddha expounded one of his most famous and highly regarded teachings:
Abstain from all evil, do good, and purify the mind.

On this day, about 2,500 years ago—the full moon day of the third lunar month, shortly after the Buddha’s enlightenment—1,250 arahant disciples spontaneously gathered without any prior planning at the Bamboo Grove in Rajagaha, Magadha, to pay homage to the Buddha. There, the Buddha delivered the cornerstone Ovāda-pāṭimokkha, instructing his disciples to “abstain from all evil, do good, and purify the mind.” This day has since become a significant traditional festival in Theravada Buddhist countries, known as Māgha Pūjā, or the Fourfold Assembly Day.

This year, the auspicious day coincided with the Chinese Lantern Festival, the final day of the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations. It is a time when millions of families gather in reunion, with a bright full moon hanging in the sky.

On such a beautiful day, nine students from Dharma Realm Buddhist University arrived together at Abhayagiri Monastery in the evening, seeking a spiritual “reunion” with the Triple Jewel. The group chanted the Ovāda-pāṭimokkha, practiced meditation, and listened to a Dharma talk. The most immersive and touching part of the evening was the solemn circumambulation ceremony in the bright moonlight. Holding candles, incense, and flowers, the assembly reverently walked around the monastery three times, expressing their deep respect for the Triple Jewel before finally offering the incense and flowers before the Buddha statue.

The serene image of the Buddha, the beautiful full moon, the vibrant flowers, the glowing candles, the fragrant incense, and the inspiring recitation and Dharma talk—all of these blended into a symphony of peace and faith that resonates deeply within my heart.

Abhayagiri on the full moon day was honestly so peaceful. As we started with chanting the Ovāda-pāṭimokkha, I was reflecting on the meaning behind it: “Abstain from all evil, do good, and purify the mind.” While meditating in the light of a diya (oil lamp), my soul felt a taste of peace. There was something calming about the words I had been reflecting on.

But the part that really got me was walking outside for circumambulation. The garden, the full moon, the flickering candlelight—it all felt soothing and radiant. Holding incense and flowers, walking slowly with everyone, I felt… connected. Not just to the Buddha or the Triple Jewel, but to the people around me, with the light in my right hand, the breeze blowing through my hair, and the sweet smell of incense.

In that moment, I thought about how, once upon a time, all 1,250 of the Buddha’s disciples had walked under the same moon, and how this moon has witnessed such auspicious days—including today. It was an amazing experience to be at Magha Pūjā.
