After half a century, Instilling Goodness Elementary School and Developing Virtue Secondary School (IGDVS) is celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2026. The founder, the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, taught that the school motto of IGDVS is “Civic Virtue and Filial Respect.” Elementary students focus primarily on filial respect, while secondary students must also emphasize civic virtue. The phrase “Developing Virtue” refers not only to cultivating the virtue of students, but also the virtue of teachers, and even the moral character of a nation.

While upholding traditional values, the schools’ academic achievements have also been highly recognized by mainstream educational institutions. Developing Virtue Secondary School has received the AP School Honor Roll’s highest distinction—the Platinum School Award—every year since 2023. The curriculum strictly follows the University of California (UC) A–G requirements. In addition to completing 30 required credits of Chinese (as a second language), students must also fulfill a rare national requirement of 24 credits of meditation courses in order to graduate.

Graduates of Developing Virtue Secondary School have demonstrated outstanding academic strength. Among alumni, there are the Gates Foundation Scholarship recipient, and the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) Scholar Award, known as the “Nobel Prize for American high school students.” Alumni have been admitted to:
• Ivy League and top private universities: Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Columbia, Brown, Stanford, University of Chicago, and others.
• University of California system: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and more.
• SAT & GPA: Students average an SAT score of 1390 and a GPA of 3.83, earning an A+ rating on school ranking platforms such as Niche.

Over the past fifty years, IGDVS has demonstrated that a “virtue first” educational model can integrate seamlessly with modern academic excellence. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a diverse series of events has been planned throughout the year, some of which have already begun leading up to the anniversary year.

On the evening of February 28, quite a few teachers and students from the early days of the school gathered in the Buddha Hall of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to share memories. Founding principal Terri Nicholson recalled that in the fall of 1975, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua decided to invite candidates running in the November election that year to Gold Mountain Monastery for a candidates’ night. One of the candidates, Carol Ruth Silver, came with Ah-Hui, an orphan she had adopted from Taiwan. When she saw Ah-Hui writing Chinese characters together with the monastics at Gold Mountain Monastery, Silver remarked, “You should start a school.” And indeed, a school was founded—initially with only nine students, ranging from four and a half to eleven years old. Thanks to the Venerable Master’s vision and the hard work of both monastic and lay teachers, that single school has now grown into four accredited elementary and secondary schools: Instilling Goodness Elementary School (boys and girls divisions) and Developing Virtue Secondary School (boys and girls divisions).

Carol Ruth Silver herself also came to the Buddha Hall. She shared that when she could not find a Mandarin class for Ah-Hui in San Francisco, her friend, Judge Harry W. Low of the San Francisco Superior Court, told her that the only way to teach Mandarin to children would be to start a school themselves. When she met Dharma Master Heng Sure and Terri Nicholson at Gold Mountain Monastery in 1975, they all wanted to start a school, but registering with the city and hiring a lawyer seemed very difficult for them. So she accompanied them to the San Francisco Office of Assessor-Recorder to register the school, which officially opened on March 1, 1976. Ah-Hui was among the first group of students.

Marion Robertson, who once volunteered as a teacher at IGDVS, recalled that Terri was very skilled at writing plays for the students to perform. Former Dharma Master Heng Yin composed many songs, some with lyrics written by the Venerable Master. The entire student body went to a professional recording studio to sing together, producing one music album. Marion helped distribute it. She remembers those days with great joy.

Alumna Dharma Master Heng Ching shared that when she attended IGDVS, the meditation classes helped her focus and improved her memory. She remembered studying the Standards for Being a Good Student and Child and the Eight Virtues of Confucianism: filial respect, fraternity, civic virtue, trustworthiness, propriety, fairness, integrity, and humility. English classes taught by Dharma Master Heng Bin and Terri greatly strengthened her language skills. She later earned a PhD in Comparative Literature from UC Davis and taught at different universities for eight years. She now teaches at Developing Virtue Girls High School at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.

Early students Lee and Richard Bradley also attended the gathering. Lee said that attending the evening ceremony at CTTB that day made her feel as if she had returned to childhood—safe and at ease. She fondly remembered the tai chi classes at Gold Mountain Monastery and the constant laughter at school. Her brother Richard recalled that school was fun, though he often got into trouble. He had a bad temper and was stubborn, which was a challenge for Principal Terri. So she arranged for the boy to learn woodworking from Alan Nicholson. Unexpectedly, within six weeks Richard made a wooden table, which delighted his mother. His character changed from then on, and he learned compassion and understanding.

Krista Robinson, who enrolled after the school moved to CTTB, remembered rescuing bugs in the rain and the grand scene of the 1982 Mountain Gate Opening Ceremony, which drew thousands of visitors. The meditation training she received has benefited her throughout her life—she carries it until now. Learning Chinese sparked her love for languages; she later studied Spanish and Italian and even taught English in Taiwan.

Roger Kellerman recalled teaching consumer economics at the boys’ high school in 1995. One of his students later attended Washington University in St. Louis, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance, then obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago, and finally earned a PhD in education from USC. That student was Wayne Chen, the evening’s master of ceremonies. Roger used Wayne as an example to show that Developing Virtue graduates often excel after high school.

Shari Epstein, a member of the first graduating class of Developing Virtue Secondary School, earned a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University and, following the Venerable Master’s instructions before his passing, returned to teach at Dharma Realm Buddhist University. She remarked that the Venerable Master had established a strong foundation for the schools, and she expressed her hope that those who have taught or studied here will continue to help the schools grow and progress over the next fifty years.
