This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua’s entering Nirvana.
To honor the Venerable Master’s boundless compassion and profound vows to propagate the Buddhadharma, Gold Coast Dharma Realm’s Shurangama Monastery held a solemn and magnificent Offering Ceremony in the main Buddha Hall. Through this event, disciples in Australia expressed their deep remembrance and utmost reverence for the Master’s great kindness in teaching and transforming living beings.
The Master’s affinity with Australia can be traced back to 1960, when he traveled to this continent for nearly ten months—from the seventh day of the tenth lunar month in 1960 to the fourth day of the eighth lunar month in 1961. At a time when Buddhism had yet to take root in Australia, he planted indestructible seeds of Dharma that would later blossom throughout the southern hemisphere.
In 1995, laywoman Rosaline Huang made a heartfelt offering of twenty-two acres of land in Queensland’s Gold Coast to Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA), founded by the Venerable Master. This became DRBA’s first branch monastery in Australia—Gold Coast Dharma Realm. The monastery strictly upholds the Buddha’s regulations and precepts. Monastics and laypeople alike cultivate in accord with the Six Great Principles, following a disciplined daily schedule: morning recitation begins at 4:00 a.m., followed by three recitations of the Shurangama Mantra at 5:00 a.m., sitting meditation at 6:00 a.m., sutra recitation at 7:30 a.m., and the meal offering at 10:30 a.m. In the afternoon, they bow the Great Compassion Repentance, hold evening recitation, and listen to Dharma talks. Lights out is at 10:00 p.m. During their free time, residents participate in work practice and support education, translation, and propagation of the Dharma.
In its early years, the monastery faced many difficulties. Resident Dharma Masters followed the Venerable Master’s principles of “adapting to conditions and living in harmony with nature” in building the monastery. The Śūraṅgama Monastry’s main Buddha Hall was designed to blend with the natural landscape while expressing deep roots in Chinese Buddhist culture. The second phase of development included the construction of the mountain gate, dining hall, Sharira Stupa, surrounding cloisters, and lotus pond. In the future, a third phase will add the Guanyin Hall—also functioning as a multipurpose building for Chan sessions, Dharma talks, and Conferences.
To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Venerable Master Hua’s entering Nirvana, Gold Coast Dharma Realm held a grand Offering Ceremony. This meaningful and wondrous Dharma door is not only an expression of Universal Worthy Bodhisattva’s practice of making vast offerings, but also a skillful means that allows everyone to take part, enabling people of all backgrounds to joyfully plant the seeds of Dharma deep within their hearts.
For many Australians, this was their first encounter with such a traditional Buddhist ceremony. The resident Dharma Masters made dedicated preparations, and what was especially moving was that not only regular participants in the community joined the event—many new friends, including those who had never studied Buddhism, also gladly took part. Some even brought beautifully prepared vegetarian dishes of their own as an offering.
When the ceremony first began, the hall was quiet and still. Many were unfamiliar with the ritual and looked on with curiosity and a bit of hesitation. But as each offering dish was passed from hand to hand, I noticed a gentle transformation in the room. One by one, smiles began to appear on the faces of the assembly. Each carefully arranged dish, rich in color, fragrance, and intention, carried more than food—it carried a sincere offering of the heart. Elderly laypeople, young children, seasoned practitioners, and even Western youths who had come only to attend a yoga class—all wore the same innocent and joyful expression, like sea-faring children discovering a new world.
Some may not have known who Venerable Master Hua was, but the spirit of the Offering was deeply felt nonetheless. This kind of Dharma door—profound in its simplicity and accessible to all—transcends nationality and background. It brings everyone together in harmony, hand to hand, light to light, in a spirit of shared reverence and joy. Without a doubt, this Offering Ceremony left a lasting impression on many of our new friends—an experience that was special, heartwarming, and filled with joy. For many, it surely planted the wish to return again. ♦
