If living beings have often committed the ten unwholesome deeds, everything they experience will be unsatisfactory.
First, as a result of killing people, they suffer the retribution of having soil contaminated by an excess of salt which renders herbal medicine ineffective.
Second, as a result of stealing, they suffer the retribution of encountering natural disasters: frost, hail, locusts, and so on. Such disasters cause widespread famine.
Third, as a result of sexual misconduct, they suffer the retribution of disastrous rains and wind as well as dust everywhere.
Fourth, as a result of false speech, they suffer the retribution of constantly encountering foul smells or stenches.
Fifth, as a result of divisive speech, they suffer the retribution of encountering uneven ground, steep cliffs, ravines, and barren lands with dead trees.
Sixth, as a result of harsh speech, they suffer the retribution of a coarse and unpleasant environment full of sand and rocks that no one would dare to touch or approach.
Seventh, as a result of frivolous speech, they suffer the retribution of an environment full of dense forest and grass all covered in thorns.
Eighth, as a result of greed, they suffer the retribution of crops that are small and scanty.
Ninth, as a result of hatred, they suffer the retribution of trees bearing bitter or acerbic fruit.
Tenth, as a result of wrong views, they suffer the retribution of crops yielding little or no harvest. These are the ten deeds that will lead to undesirable results.♣
