On October 12 2025, sixteen of us—students, staff, and volunteers—set off together to Abhayagiri Monastery for the annual Kathina Robe Offering Ceremony. Over hundred people from around the world gathered with bright smiles and open hearts to attend this event and celebrate the beautiful bond between the monastic and lay community.

As Ajahn Sudanto said, “Generosity is selfless giving, it feels good to give and it is how we relate to self and the world.” And that’s exactly how it felt! The air was filled with kindness, gratitude, and laughter. We could truly feel the warmth of everyone’s giving heart.

After the ceremony, the monks began the amazing process of hand-sewing and hand-dyeing the offered cloth into new robes. We even stayed to watch the magic moment when five pieces of cloth were sewn together into one robe; we stood outside together in the dark of night while the monks dyed the robe by hand—cold externally, warm internally. Finally, the Abbot of Abhayagiri relinquished his old robe and changed to the newly-offered one.

When Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, the founder of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas and Dharma Realm Buddhist University, was still in the world, he not only devoted himself to interreligious dialogue but also strongly advocated for unity between the Northern and Southern traditions of Buddhism. Part of the DRBU curriculum consists of studying Buddhist scriptures from both the Northern and Southern traditions. This year, the DRBU Alms Club participated for the second time in Abhayagiri Monastery’s “Kathina Robe Offering Ceremony,” thereby responding to Venerable Master Hua’s call for unity between the Northern and Southern traditions of Buddhism.
