The Buddhist Lecture Hall in Hong Kong, along with other monasteries of Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA) founded by Venerable Master Hua, held annual Dharma assemblies around the world to commemorate the Anniversary of Venerable Master Hua’s Entering Nirvana.
On the day before the 30th Anniversary of Venerable Master Hua’s Entering Nirvana, the Buddhist Lecture Hall also concluded its annual twenty-one day Avatamsaka Sutra Recitation Session.
Beginning on May 10, 2025, in remembrance of Venerable Master Hua’s teachings on the Avatamsaka Sutra, Dharma Master Heng Hing and Dharma Master Jin Run took this opportunity during the recitation session to lead the assembly in delving deeply into the Sutra’s treasury—comprehending its profound principles and putting its teachings into practice.
The Avatamsaka Sutra is a long sutra comprising eighty-one volumes, and it is no easy task to recite the entire sutra. Participants in the twenty-one day session must arrive on time each day, regardless of weather conditions, and endure Hong Kong’s hot and humid summer while fully engaging in an intensive eight-hour daily Dharma schedule. In addition, they must stay after the session ends to clean the Way-Place and prepare for the next day. Yet despite these challenges, none of the hardships discouraged the dedicated volunteers—many of whom came from afar—from wholeheartedly participating in the Avatamsaka Sutra Recitation Session.
By May 30, 2025, the last day of the Avatamsaka Sutra Recitation Session, the Assembly was filled with Dharma joy. Dharma Masters were very kind and spared more than three hours for everyone to share Dharma on benefits they’ve gained from participating in the Avatamsaka Sutra Recitation Session.
For many participants, this was not their first time joining the recitation. Yet, through the daily teachings of the Dharma Masters and the collective strength of practicing this Recitation Session together, they experienced a renewed understanding of the Sutra. They felt inspired by the teachings, nourished by the practice, and strengthened in both their Bodhi resolve and dedication to cultivation. The Dharma session concluded successfully.

June 1, 2025, was the 30th anniversary of the Venerable Master Hua’s entering Nirvana. Although rain had been forecast, the weather turned unexpectedly cool and clear. Nearly one-hundred people gathered at the Hong Kong Buddhist Lecture Hall to honor the Venerable Master’s legacy. With sincerity and reverence, they reflected on his teachings, learned about his life, and explored how to apply his compassion, mindfulness, and wisdom in daily life.
The event featured Universal Bowing, a Meal Offering with 108 special offerings, and a Dharma Feast. Participants also had the opportunity to listen to the record of Dharma spoken by the Venerable Master Hua, as well as by Dharma Masters and fellow members of the assembly.
This year’s Dharma Feast and Dharma Offering session was especially uplifting. Dharma Masters began by sharing the Dharma with the assembly. Dharma Master spoke about the Venerable Master Hua’s three great vows: to establish Way-Places, to translate the Buddhist canon, and to promote education. She noted that the Sangha of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA) has continued to carry forward the Venerable Master’s legacy—upholding his spirit of selflessness, his teachings of compassion, and his profound wisdom. Notably, significant progress has been made over the past thirty years in realizing the Master’s vision. The Sangha have guided the assemblies in honoring the Venerable Master’s vows and supporting DRBA’s branch monasteries around the world.
In closing, Dharma Masters encouraged everyone in the assembly to take up the Venerable Master Hua’s three great vows as both a personal practice and a lifelong commitment.
In the past, many disciples shared personal stories about their experiences with Venerable Master Hua. It was truly a blessing to have been near the Master during his lifetime. However, it has now been thirty years since his passing. During these decades, many of the older disciples have passed away, while new disciples—some of whom have never seen the Venerable Master in person—have taken refuge and joined the Association.
Some of these newer disciples first encountered the Dharma as children, attending ethics classes, art classes, and Buddhist studies at the monasteries. They have learned the teachings of Venerable Master Hua and have now grown into adulthood. A few shared their recent life experiences during the Dharma assembly. Some expressed that although they never met the Venerable Master in person, they feel his presence everywhere—like a Bodhisattva pervading space. Even family members of volunteers came forward to share their stories.
A volunteer’s son also shared his reflections. As a child, he accompanied his mother to the Buddhist Lecture Hall and participated in the children’s classes. Now grown up, he expressed how the lessons he learned back then have stayed with him. He is especially grateful for the strict and disciplined environment of the Lecture Hall, which helped cultivate in him a strong sense of self-discipline. This habit, he said, has made him highly adaptable—especially during the most challenging times at work.
He also acknowledged that it was through his mother’s dedication as a volunteer that he received the blessings of being introduced to the Way-Place. Because of this, he is now willing to support his mother’s volunteer work and expressed his intention to visit the Way Place more often in the future.
Overall, these Dharma sharings reminded us of the inconceivable vows and teachings of the Venerable Master Hua. Seeing the fruits of his efforts today, we witness how the Sangha continues to vigorously uphold and transmit his teachings even after his Nirvana. Under the compassionate guidance of the Sangha, many volunteers have progressed from knowing little about Buddhism to becoming role models who now inspire others to draw near the Dharma. Just as the early disciples began with no knowledge of Buddhism and gradually received guidance from the kind and compassionate Venerable Master, so too do today’s disciples continue to receive support from the Sangha. This enables their roots of goodness to grow deeper, their cultivation path to continue steadily, and their connection to the Three Jewels to become ever stronger.
We sincerely hope that the annual commemoration of the Venerable Master Hua’s Nirvana will continue in the years to come. Although there was plenty of delicious food today, our minds were not attached to it. The true purpose of this gathering was to remember the Venerable Master’s teachings, to practice in accordance with the Dharma he taught, to make sincere offerings, and to inspire ourselves to bring more people to support and uphold the Buddha’s teachings—so that the Dharma may continue to flourish and benefit countless sentient beings.♦
